A brake caliper for an R32 Skyline can look right in a catalogue and still be wrong for the car in your workshop. The same goes for sensors, trim, cooling parts and suspension components across Japanese imports. To find OEM Japanese car parts properly, you need more than a model name and a rough production year. You need the vehicle’s exact build details, the original part number where possible, and a supplier who understands JDM specification.
For owners keeping a 1990s or 2000s Japanese classic on the road, getting this right saves time, avoids repeat labour and protects the way the car drives. OEM parts are not always the cheapest option, and they are not always available, but they remain the right starting point when fitment, reliability and original operation matter.
Start with the vehicle, not the part description
Japanese manufacturers often made small but meaningful changes within the same generation. A Nissan Skyline, Toyota Supra or Honda Integra may have different components depending on engine code, transmission, drivetrain, trim level, facelift status and destination market. Australian-delivered, Japanese domestic market and export vehicles can all use different parts despite sharing a badge.
The most useful information is the chassis or VIN number, followed by the model code, engine code and build date. On many JDM vehicles, the chassis number is particularly important because it identifies the original specification in manufacturer catalogues. Find OEM Japanese car parts by part number
A genuine manufacturer part number is the strongest identifier you can provide. It removes much of the guesswork created by common model names and helps distinguish left- and right-hand components, manual and automatic versions, early and late production parts, and different market specifications.
You can often find a part number on the component itself, its original packaging, past invoices or workshop records. Numbers may be stamped into brackets, printed on labels or cast into housings. Take a clear photo of the entire item as well as close-ups of labels, plugs, mounting points and hose connections. A photo can reveal differences that a written description misses.
Be careful with superseded numbers. Manufacturers regularly replace an earlier part number with a later version, sometimes because the original part is discontinued and sometimes because the design has been revised. A reputable supplier should be able to confirm whether a supersession is suitable for your vehicle rather than simply substituting the nearest available item.
Know what OEM, genuine and aftermarket actually mean
These terms are often used loosely, particularly in online listings. That can be costly when you are buying a critical part for an older import.
Genuine parts are supplied through the vehicle manufacturer’s network and carry the manufacturer branding. OEM usually means the original equipment manufacturer – the company that produced the component for the vehicle maker. In some cases, an OEM-branded part can be effectively identical to the genuine item without the manufacturer packaging. However, the term is also used casually by sellers, so it is worth asking exactly what is being supplied.
Aftermarket parts are made by third-party manufacturers. Many are excellent, especially where an original component is no longer available or where the goal is improved performance. Others vary widely in material quality, tolerances and longevity. The right choice depends on the job.
For engine management sensors, ignition components, seals, wheel bearings, cooling hoses and service items, proven OEM or genuine quality is often worth the extra spend. For a performance build, an upgraded aftermarket radiator, brake pad or suspension bush may be the better option. The key is choosing a part for the purpose of the vehicle, not just the lowest price on the screen.
Check availability before planning the repair
Some OEM Japanese parts remain readily available. Others are discontinued, on backorder or only obtainable through overseas stock. This is a reality for classic imports, particularly interior trim, model-specific body parts and limited-production performance components.
If your car is off the road, ask for realistic availability before committing to a repair plan. A workshop may be able to complete most of the work quickly but need to wait for one sensor, gasket or moulding. Knowing that early lets you decide whether to wait for genuine stock, source a quality equivalent or consider a used original part in suitable condition.
Used OEM parts can make sense for items that are no longer produced, including interior switches, body hardware, headlights and trim. They need careful inspection. Age, corrosion, broken mounting tabs and hidden wear can turn a cheap used part into another job later. For safety-related and high-wear components, new quality parts are usually the sensible call.
Avoid the common fitment mistakes
The most expensive parts mistake is ordering on appearance alone. Two components may share a shape, bolt pattern or connector but differ internally. This is especially common with airflow meters, ECUs, injectors, ignition modules and turbo-related components.
Another trap is assuming a part from a related model will fit. A GT-R part is not automatically right for every Skyline, and a Toyota part shared across several platforms may still have different calibration, offset or wiring. Forum advice can be useful for identifying possibilities, but it should not replace chassis-number verification.
Also consider the full repair, not only the failed component. Replacing a timing belt, for example, may be the right time to inspect tensioners, idlers, seals and the water pump. Give your supplier the information they need
A specialist parts supplier can work far more efficiently with complete details. A coolant leak, intermittent misfire or noisy front end may have several possible causes, and ordering components before diagnosis can waste money.

There are times when waiting is not practical. If an OEM item is discontinued and the car is needed for daily use, a proven aftermarket replacement may be the sensible answer. For performance cars, an upgraded component may genuinely offer better heat control, braking performance or durability than the original design. The best decision is informed, not automatic.
Keep a record of every part number, invoice and installation date. It makes future servicing easier, helps the next owner understand the car, and gives you a reliable reference when the same component needs attention years down the track. The right part is not simply the one that arrives first – it is the one that fits your exact vehicle and keeps it performing at its best.
