The most expensive surprises are usually hidden under the paint, trim and plastic undertrays. Before ordering performance parts or planning a colour change, inspect the chassis thoroughly. Rust, previous accident repairs, poor-quality modifications and missing factory components can turn an attractive project into a costly exercise.
Check the common corrosion areas first. On many Japanese cars, that means the sills, jacking points, floorpan, wheel arches, strut towers, windscreen surrounds, boot floor and seams behind the bumpers. Water can sit beneath sound deadening and underbody coatings for years, particularly on cars that have lived near the coast or spent time in damp storage.
